I use a variety of buff, speckled, white, and earthy red stonewares to make my ceramics. Pieces are wheel-thrown and/or hand built. I will trim and detail work to create unique surface patterns and/or textures. I make my own glazes and slips following established recipes, using oxides to achieve distinctive earth-tone hues.
When I reclaim my mistakes and clay trims, I mix these clays to find wonderful, unique results. A new piece may have have an unexpected spot of color, a line of contrasting clay, or a pop of speckles.
All of my work is twice-fired in my electric kiln, first to bisque pieces for glazing, and then to glaze-fire. Final temperatures reach cone 6, about 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit, vitrifying clay and glazes into beautiful, ceramic keepsakes.
